The sky over a Moray port was illuminated by a pyrotechnic display to celebrate a golden couple last night.
Portgordon hosted its 23rd annual fireworks display with a crowd of 2,000 people marvelling at the spectacle.
Families crammed in round the port and along the coastline in the village to see the event go off with a bang.
And Veronica Thow pressed the button to start the entertainment on her golden wedding anniversary.
However, the 70-year-old, who has been involved in the event since its inception, could not be joined by her husband George after he suffered a health scare.
Mr Thow had to be kept in Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin for checks on his heart, but urged his wife to attend.
Mrs Thow explained: “George isn’t well enough to be here, but he said: ‘You go on ahead’. It’s a shame, but he didn’t want me to miss it.”
The 25-minute display was hailed as the “best ever” in the village by Mrs Thow after she watched the fireworks with her family on the quayside.
She added: “I think this is the best-ever view I’ve had of them. Usually I’m away doing jobs or minding grandchildren.”
Special golden sections were included in the display with Spandau Ballet’s famous hit blasting from the loudspeakers as the first fireworks made their way into the sky.
Children, who were wrapped up warmly for the evening, waved glow sticks in the air during the event to add more colour to the evening.
Youngsters compared some of the explosions to spaceships and shouted “boom”. Other fireworks resembled love hearts in another tribute to the Thows.
A series of explosions in quick succession closed the display. At which point, a round of applause started amongst the crowd as the final embers landed in the harbour.
Fireworks committee chairman Kenny Gunn praised the large turnout from locals.
He said: “It’s been a fantastic evening. A lot of people have travelled a long way for it, including from Banff, Aberlour and Elgin.
“It’s always a big day for Portgordon. It takes months of planning and it is all done by our own volunteers. It is a massive effort.”
