An experienced fighter pilot has vowed to “write new chapters” in the history of RAF Lossiemouth’s most storied squadron upon being appointed as its new leader.
Wing Commander Chris Hoyle has taken over the 1(Fighter) Squadron of Typhoon jets at the Moray airfield, having flown the aircraft at RAF bases elsewhere in the UK.
Wg Cdr Hoyle has prepared himself for the important post by completing an advanced command course at the RAF’s Defence Academy in the south of England.
Prior to accepting his first posting north of the border, he also worked in the air force’s Warfare Centre at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.
Yesterday, he said it was an “honour” to helm the historic fighter squadron – which is the oldest of its kind in the RAF and has roots stretching as far back as 1878.
Wg Cdr Hoyle added: “I thank all those who through professionalism, dedication and commitment have brought the squadron to this point in such fine style.
“I look forward to serving our nation and writing new chapters in its history, as we tackle the challenges that lie ahead.”
He assumed the role from departing leader Mike Sutton, who oversaw the fighter squadron for more than two years since September, 2014.
Wg Cdr Sutton said: “It has been a privilege to work with such a professional and committed team.
“I wish Wg Cdr Hoyle every success as he takes the reins of the oldest and finest fighter squadron in the world.”
As well as assisting with military operations and exercises, the 1(F) Squadron are scrambled to intercept threats to the UK’s airspace as part of the base’s Quick Reaction Alert fleet.
