There are no plans for primary schools in Moray to introduce a ban on homework.
Inverlochy Primary in Fort William scrapped children doing work outside class-time this week in a move backed by students and parents.
Yesterday education bosses at Moray Council insisted there were no moves afoot to replicate the move – although the ultimate decision lay with schools.
During the meeting of the children and young people’s services committee Forres councillor Gordon Alexander asked officers whether pupils’ grades would improve as a result.
Head of curriculum, Vivienne Cross, said: “These decisions are autonomous head teachers but we would rather look at encouraging families to grow together instead of homework.
“Greater emphasis on different activities or going on educational visits can really enhance learning for children.
“So maybe we shouldn’t stop homework but look at how we keep up family learning.”
Mr Alexander agreed it was essential for children to continue learning at home away from the classroom.
He said: “The biggest problem with closing the attainment gap is getting parents to do their part. There’s a limit to how much a school can do. The children are only there for six hours a day, five days a week.
“If they are stimulated at home by parents then it can help them to achieve so much more.”
