Hundreds of people packed into Elgin Town Hall last night for an “emotional” concert honouring soldiers whose lives have been lost in conflict.
The military wives choir from the Kinloss Army Barracks teamed up with Elgin City Brass band to stage the musical evening.
The performers blended modern tunes with evocative wartime ditties, and a Vera Lynn medley brought back memories for many in the audience.
Another highlight was the song All That Jazz, from musical Chicago, which lifted the mood and spurred attendees to clap and sing along.
The concert drew to a close with a rendition of hymn An Evening Prayer, which was played by the band and sung by choir members.
When a lone bugle player in the balcony played the Last Post, many in the hall were seen wiping tears from their eyes.
The evening was brought to a climax with a powerful performance of Westlife’s You Raise Me Up, which received rapturous applause.
Proceeds from the concert are being donated to the Poppy Scotland charity, which has expressed hopes that the event can become an annual tradition.
And throughout the night, children from Torridon nursery centres in Lossiemouth and Elgin collected money for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) – which supports service families and veterans through tough times.
The choir’s treasurer, Lorna Alexander, said: “It was an honour and pleasure to take part in such a fantastic event, for a cause close to our hearts.
“Hopefully this will turn out to be the first of many collaborations between Kinloss Military Wives Choir and Elgin City Brass Band.”
