A tractor spilled massive bales of hay across the road in a Moray town yesterday, causing traffic chaos.
Traffic tailed back on either side of Keith as frantic efforts were made to remove dozens of heavy bundles from the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road.
The tractor shed the hay shortly before 1.30pm, and the road remained closed for an hour and a half.
As attempts to lift the bales from the road were carried out, traffic queued beyond the outskirts of the town on either side of the A96.
The tractor encountered problems while turning on a sharp right-hand bend near the Factory Shop on Union Street.
It was travelling east at the time and it is believed that most of the 42 stacks – which were double piled in seven rows of three tiers – tumbled from the trailer.
Another local farmer helped scoop up the bales from the road and packed most back onto the trailer.
But some were carted out of the way and stored nearby in a time-saving measure, as drivers grew increasingly exasperated.
A police spokeswoman said: “The road was closed at 1.35pm, after a tractor with a trailer overturned.
“Hay bales had spilled onto the road, which needed to be cleared up as they were blocking the lanes.
“The spillage was cleared by 3pm and the road was reopened at that point.”
She added that nobody had been injured during the incident.
