A 10-year-old girl who was injured after being hit by a police van in Elgin last night has been airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Police confirmed that the youngster is in a “serious” condition this morning, as officers launched an appeal for information on the accident.
The incident took place on the A941 road leading to Lossiemouth at about 6.50pm last night.
The youngster was crossing the road near Gray’s Walk, between the Buccaneer filling station and the Bonnie Earl pub, when a marked police van on routine patrol collided with her.
The vehicle was being driven by a male police officer, and its front sustained some damage.
The girl was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin immediately afterwards, but has since been airlifted to Aberdeen, where she is being treated for “serious injuries.”
Sergeant Rob Warnock, from the road policing unit, said: “Inquiries into the circumstances of the incident are at an early stage.
“I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the police van or the female pedestrian, immediately prior to the incident to contact Police Scotland on 101.”
