The increase in traffic in Forres is already the subject of a petition campaigning to improve pedestrian safety.
The town’s community council has called for a new crossing on the A96 near the train station for rail passengers.
Extra services are due to be added to Inverness next year with an upsurge in people using the trains expected as a result.
The proposal has won the backing from MSPs Richard Lochhead, David Stewart and Douglas Ross to reduce the risk of a potential accident.
Forres community councillor Eleanor Hayward has seen the amount of vehicles on the area’s roads surge in recent years and believes it is an issue that will not go away.
She said: “There is a problem with increased traffic through Forres and in the surrounding area.
“Of course there’s going to be a lot of new-builds around about too, especially out Grantown Road.
“We’ve got three new-builds there already and it seems that this is going to be on-going thing.”
Petitions calling for the new crossing at the train station will be collated next month before the results are sent to transport chiefs.
Transport Scotland has already pledged to carry out investigations to see if a crossing is needed on the A96.
