Moray MSP Richard Lochhead believes the region should cash in on its association with one of the staples of every good Hogmanay party – whisky.
He said: “The notion of a signature Hogmanay event in Moray is certainly worth exploring, especially considering that many people around the world love a Speyside dram to bring in the New Year.
“Many successful Moray events have been created in recent years that are good for tourism, the local economy and community spirit.
“There is a momentum in Moray in terms of capitalising on the region’s attraction to tourists and there is no reason why a new Hogmanay event wouldn’t work here.”
Modest celebrations where residents raise a glass to the local drinks industry already take place in Dufftown – which is hailed as the malt whisky capital of the world.
Party-goers traditionally meet in the Square to share a dram and bring in the bells in front of its clock tower.
