Police officers have issued a fresh appeal for help in tracking down vandals who caused £10,000 worth of damage at an ancient Moray landmark.
The glass casing, surrounding Sueno’s Stone at Forres, was “maliciously” smashed with rocks last Wednesday.
And yesterday, police revealed the perpetrators were yet to be caught.
However investigating officers said they remained determined to bring them to justice.
Constable Jamie Walker said: “This was a mindless vandalism to an important cultural landmark, which has rightly angered the local community.
“We would ask that anyone who may have information regarding this incident comes forward to speak to us.”
The 21ft standing stone is believed to date as far back as the 9th century, and is one of Forres’s most cherished features.
Locals were furious when the damage was discovered and local councillor, George Alexander, blasted the “idiots” who had committed the act.
The Forres representative suggested someone had deliberately brought rocks to the monument in order to smash the huge panels.
Last night, he voiced fears that arresting the individuals responsible would be “challenging”.
Mr Alexander said: “Of course, we are hopeful that the police will get a result. But that won’t be easy, this was done when nobody else was around and there can’t be much to go on.”
A local joiner replaced the broken glass with wooden boards last Friday, and these still remain in place.
Historic Environment Scotland confirmed the three shattered panels “might take some time to replace”.
