The ancient Burning of the Clavie ceremony received cross-party parliamentary approval just hours before the first of the staves were ignited yesterday.
Highlands and Islands MSP, Douglas Ross, highlighted the festivities during questions at Holyrood.
The Conservative politician told his colleagues: “The Clavie is a great traditional event that Burghead is rightly very proud of.”
He asked Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop, to recognise its importance and the efforts of the team behind it.
Mr Ross said: “As Clavie King, Dan Ralph, and his crew prepare to carry the flaming wooden barrel around the village, will the cabinet secretary join me in praising the tradition?
“Will she also join me in praising the younger members of the team, such as Jamie Davidson, Scott Crawford and Keir Irwine, who are following in the footsteps of their ancestors?”
The cabinet secretary responded: “I congratulate all those who are involved in what I understand is a vibrant and inclusive event, that pays tribute to the longstanding heritage of that place and of Scotland.”
Moray MSP, Richard Lochhead, extended his best wishes to everyone involved in the yearly celebration
The SNP member added: “Moray is steeped in history, culture and tradition, and there is no greater reminder of this than the annual Burning of the Clavie.
“The Clavie King and the rest of the crew do a fantastic job keeping this special tradition alive.
“Possession of a piece of the clavie is said to bring good luck for the year ahead, and I hope that 2017 is a glowing one for Brochers.”
