Moray residents, thinking about standing at this year’s council elections, have been told not to feel daunted by the prospect.
A changing of the guard is expected in the local authority chambers at May’s vote with up to half the current members choosing not to stand again.
That news opens up the opportunity for plenty of new faces to win election. And returning officer, Mark Palmer, has encouraged interested members of the public to get involved.
He said: “There may be some prospective candidates considering standing for election. I would encourage them to come forward to find out more about the role – everyone’s welcome.”
Information sessions have been organised, so that prospective councillors can find out as much as possible before deciding whether to put their name on the ballot.
Mr Palmer added: “Those new to the process may feel daunted by the prospect of putting themselves forward.
“The session has been developed to give some understanding to the pressures and challenges that a councillor will face, particularly in the current financial climate within the authority.”
Information will also be given about how to become nominated and campaigning advice, as well as what to expect on polling day itself.
The two-hour session has been scheduled for Saturday, March 4 at the council chambers in Elgin. Places should be booked by phoning the election office on 01343 563459 or by emailing election.enquiries@moray.gov.uk.
Nominations open on Tuesday, March 14 and close on Wednesday, March 29.
