An 88-year-old man who died in a house fire in Moray has been described as a fiercely independent and “polite gentleman”.
Police have confirmed Kenneth Hall was inside the Elgin Road home in Lossiemouth when it went up in flames.
An investigation has now commenced, but there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
Yesterday, flowers were laid on the pavement by many residents as a mark of respect to Mr Hall.
And neighbours paid tribute to the well-known pensioner who was often seen tending to the wide variety of plants in his garden.
Locals even reported seeing him on the roof of his house in recent years repairing his beloved home.
One neighbour said: “You could see his house meant a lot to him. He was always out with the fork in the garden or pottering on.
“It’s a shame what’s happened. He was very independent and did well to keep doing what he was doing at his age.”
Another said: “He was a very polite gentleman. Even at his age, I would still see his car going about the town a lot.
“I used to see him on the roof adding new bits to the house. He was always keeping himself busy with his house in some way.”
Residents rushed to help emergency crews when they arrived at the fire shortly after 4pm on Wednesday evening
It is understood a neighbour was first to raise the alarm after seeing smoke coming from the roof of the home.
Investigators entered the property yesterday to begin to establish the circumstances that culminated in tragedy.
Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson said: “My thoughts are obviously with Mr Hall’s family at this very sad and difficult time.
“Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances leading up to the incident, including a joint investigation involving the police and the fire service.
“However, early indications would suggest that there are no suspicious circumstances.
“I would like to thank the local community for their patience while emergency services attended this tragic incident. Your cooperation was much appreciated.”
