A Speyside community group is fighting just to keep the lights on at a struggling village hall.

Residents in the picturesque village of Carron want to transform their communal building to bring more attractions to the area, and offer more activities for locals.

But for now, the group tasked with looking after the venue say that even paying electric bills is proving a challenge.

The Carron Community Council is preparing a fundraising mission to change that.

After paying off some bills, the group wants to perform a string of repairs and improvements to the venue.

And tomorrow night, they are staging a ceilidh there to show off what it is capable of.

Carron Community Council chairman, Nick Craven, said: “Our first objective is to pay for the electric bills, we quite honestly do not even have that at present.”

Mr Craven said the village hall was at risk of going without insurance this year, until the local group staged a quiz night to collect enough cash to provide coverage.

He added: “We only managed to pay that off on the last day possible, that is how close to the wind we are sailing.

“Ultimately, we would like to install disabled toilets and access and our electrics also need to be overhauled.

“Really, I have a never-ending wish-list for the hall so it would be difficult to even put an overall price on it.

“We would hope though, that after some improvements, it can become a well-used hall with a variety of different attractions and events.”

Tomorrow evening’s shindig will feature music from the Aberlour Rollers ceilidh band.

The musicians are playing free of charge in an effort to support the community council’s revamp plans.

Mr Craven said: “Having the ceilidh is to demonstrate what the hall can be used for.”

The ceilidh will take place tomorrow, at 8pm.

Those attending are invited to “bring their own bottles, dancing shoes and blister plasters”.

Tickets are available by calling 01340 810823.
