Moray bars aim for a ‘knockout’ to raise thousands for charity

More than 10,000 people are expected at Gordon Castle for the weekend's Highland Games.
More than 10,000 people are expected at Gordon Castle for the weekend's Highland Games.

Pubs in Moray will lock horns at the weekend to raise thousands for charity.

A total of 16 teams from bars and hotels across the region will hurdle obstacles against the clock at the Gordon Castle Highland Games.

The fundraiser has been organised by the Moray District Licensed Trade Association (MDLTA) to celebrate the 125th anniversary of its formation.

A similar event by the group to mark its centenary helped raise an impressive £24,000 for new equipment at Dr Gray’s Hospital.

And organisers are hopeful a similar total can be raised again this year to help Alzheimer Scotland.

MDLTA secretary Ken Asher praised the commitment of licensed premises to come together to raise funds for the charity.

He said: “The teams have been told they’ll be getting wet and I’m sure they will enter into it in the right spirit.

“It was very successful when we did it 25 years ago. Alzheimer’s disease is something that affects so many families, including my own.

“There’s so much help that’s needed with it so hopefully this will make a difference for a lot of people.”

Premises taking part in the challenge are spread across the region from Cullen, Forres, Elgin, Hopeman, Keith, Dufftown and Rothes.

The event is taking place on Saturday, May 20 – the first time the Gordon Castle Highland Games has been extended to a second day.

About 10,000 people are expected for the Fochabers event and have been invited to don bowler caps and hobble skirts for the opening day to celebrate the glory years of the games.

The teams will take their marks at 1pm.
