Two Typhoon jets, attached to the station’s Quick Reaction Alert fleet, soared from the Moray airbase on Saturday morning. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence later confirmed that they had been called on “in response to two Russian aircraft entering the UK’s airspace”. The air force and Royal Navy have been frequently called on to monitor Russian planes and warships in recent years. Fighter jets from Lossiemouth were sent to divert two Russian Tupolev TU-160 Blackjack bombers which passed near UK airspace in February. RAF Lossiemouth’s unit of Typhoon fast-jets is on standby round-the-clock to intercept hostile planes approaching close to UK airspace. The squadrons were relocated from RAF Leuchars to the Moray station in September, 2014, and pilots generally respond to alerts within 10 minutes.
