A bequest from a former pupil at a private school in Moray will be used to open its doors to more of the region’s youngsters.
Christopher Beadle attended Gordonstoun from 1946 to 1951 before becoming an RAF pilot and embarking on a career developing scientific instruments.
When the Cambridge University graduate, who was from the north of England, died last year, he left a donation to the school in his will.
The fund, which is being match-funded by Gordonstoun, will now be used to offer discounted bursaries to 10 children from the north-east of Scotland to join the school for two years of sixth form, starting in September.
Places will be open to pupils who are able to demonstrate they will make an outstanding contribution to and benefit from academic study, performing arts, sports, outdoor education or sailing.
Principal Lisa Kerr said: “The founder of Gordonstoun, Kurt Hahn, had the ambition of widening access to a Gordonstoun education to as many young people as possible and we continue to be committed to realising this goal.
“We are therefore delighted that the Christopher Beadle Gordonstoun Bursary will give up to ten students from the north east of Scotland the opportunity to attend as day students for the two years of sixth form on a bursary of 10% to 50%.
“We are so grateful to our late former pupil, Christopher Beadle, whose generosity has made this scheme possible.”
A spokeswoman for Gordonstoun declined to reveal the size of the bequest at the request of the family. The deadline for submissions to the fund is July 23.
