Tree conservationist that helped plant 180,000 trees to receive award from Prime Minister

Fay Blackburn has volunteered for Trees for Life for more than 20 years.

A Moray conservationist who has devoted more than two decades to preserving some of Scotland’s most historic trees will receive a personal award from the Prime Minister today.

Fay Blackburn is the longest-serving group leader with charity Trees for Life.

Over the last 20 years the Findhorn campaigner has led 450 volunteers on 225 trips through woodland in Scotland.

And in that time she has directly helped bring about the planting of about 180,000 trees to preserve the landscape for future generations.

Mrs Blackburn has devoted herself to promoting conservation in the Caledonian Forest, a historic expanse dating back to the Ice Age that once covered most of the country.

Now the 74-year-old will become the latest recipient of the “Points of Light” award, which recognises volunteers who change their community and inspire others.

Mrs Blackburn said: “I’m quite taken aback that our voluntary work has been noticed, but I think it’s really brilliant that it has been as it makes a huge difference to the organisation.

“I’m so pleased that the project has received recognition and it’s wonderful that I could be a part of it.

“I believe you’re never too old to volunteer – I’m 75 next month and regularly volunteer with an 81-year-old.”

Mrs Blackburn is the latest recipient of the accolade from Moray, following in the footsteps of motor neurone disease campaigner Lucy Lintott last year.

Today the volunteer will receive the award from the Prime Minister.

In a personal letter to the conservationist, Theresa May said: “Your dedication means that you have had a huge impact on the forests of Scotland, helping to conserve and regrow areas of the Caledonian Forest in particular.

“Your work is helping to rebuild tree populations and preserve these beautiful landscapes for future generations.”

Each of the trips Mrs Blackburn leads involves up to 10 volunteers going on a week-long expedition to a cottage in Glen Affric in the Highlands where the team can plant up to 4,000 trees.

Trees for Life founder Alan Watson Featherstone said: “Fay still volunteers regularly in our tree nursery and tirelessly works to recruit new volunteers and supporters for us.

“She is one of our star volunteers and a shining example of how much a passionate and dedicated person can contribute.”
