A Moray choir is preparing for an emotional performance to support their instructor.
When the Bel Canto Youth Singers take to the stage next month, they will be raising money for Alzheimer Scotland.
The poignant decision comes after their singing teacher Ann Munro’s husband Colin was diagnosed with the illness.
Members of the group were regular visitors to Mrs Munro’s Lossiemouth home, where her husband would regularly listen to their rehearsals.
Now the youngsters have decided to use music to help raise awareness of the illness and the way song can help rekindle distant memories.
Choir member James Kennedy, 14, said: “Alzheimer’s has affected so many people and it’s an awful thing to see happen.
“I know that one of the best ways to help with it is music, and especially Scottish music.
“I think it’s such a great way to bring them back to their old selves and bring back some of their old memories.
“We just thought raising money from the concert would be a nice way to help.”
During the Elgin date the Forres Academy pupil will perform solos from musicals Les Miserables and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat as well as taking his place in the choir for classical songs.
Other members of the group, which range from 10 to 18 years old and are from across Moray, will also take their turn in the spot light.
Organiser Sandra Kennedy said: “So many of the young people involved in the choir have become aware of what Alzheimer’s is through Ann.
“I think they are relating to it very well and were very keen to do all that they could to help.
“Music is so important to help people with the disease. It’s good to know the donations will be used locally to fund activities here.”
The concert takes place at Williamson Hall in Elgin at 7pm on Saturday, September 9. Entry £8, under 16s £4.
