Local schools still have lead in water despite works

Water at three primary schools in Moray remains contaminated with lead following attempts to fix the problem.

Council staff have tried to restore supplies to classrooms at Portgordon, Portknockie and Findochty following the discovery last month.

However, at yesterday’s meeting of the authority’s children and young people’s committee it was confirmed it was still an issue.

Bottled water has been issued to the schools and NHS Grampian has advised the health risk was “very low”.

The council’s head of lifelong learning, Graham Jarvis, said: “There were initially, what seemed like, simple solutions to the issue but on further inspection were less simple than anticipated. There seems to be a number of different mains water supplies coming into the schools from different areas. We’re actively pursuing it and doing the best we can.”

The contamination was discovered following routine checks. Tests were later done at all schools in Moray and no issues were found.
