Pupils learning about tourism will be given the chance to secure an industry-recognised certification this week at historic Brodie Castle.
Moray’s Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) group has teamed up with the management of the 16th century site to give 40 youngsters, who are studying at a National 5 level, the opportunity to complete special World Host training, which has been undertaken by 10% of Scotland’s tourism workforce.
As well as getting a valuable qualification for their CVs, the pupils will be able to gain an insight into how the National Trust for Scotland has ensured Brodie Castle’s continuing success in attracting visitors to Moray.
The lessons will be carried out in the castle’s converted stables.
Clare Taylor, operations manager at Brodie Castle, said: “Brodie Castle is delighted to be able to support Moray pupils and DYW Moray in achieving this recognised certificate of excellence.
“To play a part in developing the potential future leaders of tourism and heritage is exciting for the National Trust for Scotland, especially helping the young people in the region develop their passion for a career in tourism.
“We hope they enjoy their time at Brodie Castle, and we look forward to future partnership initiatives with DYW Moray.”
The training, which started yesterday, will continue until Thursday.
All successful pupils will receive a certificate and a badge in recognition of their achievement.
Their teachers will also be given the chance to take on the training while they accompany the pupils on the visit.
Tami Wilson, hospitality lecturer at Moray College said: “This is a great opportunity for young people to achieve a qualification that will be useful to them whatever industry they eventually choose to go into.
“Moray is currently working towards becoming a World Host destination by ensuring that at least 50% of its workforce in customer facing roles have achieved this training – by delivering this to the school pupils, it will help us reach our target, and also encourage other businesses to offer the training to their staff.”
