VIDEO: Spectacular fire festival returns to Moray hilltop

Flames have erupted on the summit of a Moray beauty spot to herald the start of a spectacular light and music show.

Yesterday the first visitors to Colours of Cluny climbed the slopes to Nelson’s Tower among woodland lit up in a spectrum of hues.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted more than 12,500 people to Forres to sample the atmospheric event, which was inspired by the Enchanted Forest near Pitlochry.

Now organisers have expanded the venue, which weaves its way round woodland paths on Cluny Hill, as well as adding new attractions.

Fire will shoot from the top and the foot of the 19th-century tower at the summit with UV lighting added to light up facepaint on young visitors.

Performers with flame-tipped wings will also dazzle audiences through the 12 evening shows with a soundtrack that has been especially written for the event by composer Kevin Murray.

Creative director Kate Bonney, who grew up in Forres, said: “There was a little bit of holding back last year to give us room to grow.

“The first event exceeded my expectations, everyone’s expectations, but there was still that part of me looking at fresh ideas.

“I’ve been up the hill a few times during the year, just looking for inspiration and to gather ideas. It’s never the same,” she added.

Organisers have revealed the inaugural Colours of Cluny generated a total of £125,000 for the local economy.

Profits from last year have also been poured into improving paths on the route to the summit with added benches for spectators to marvel at their surroundings.

Graham Murdoch, chairman of organising company Forres Features, revealed the event is already having a tourism legacy.

He said: “The hill has been busier than it has been for a number of years during the summer, there’s a lot more people aware of the tower. Last year was a tremendous success, it was amazing to come anywhere near to what the team at Enchanted Forest put on at a first attempt. People really responded well.”

Colours of Cluny runs until Sunday, November 19. Tickets are available online at www.coloursofcluny.com
