A bird hide at a Moray beauty spot has been completely destroyed by fire.
The timber lookout at the wetland at Chapelton Farm near Forres has been reduced to charred remains.
Locals, who tend to the area to ensure it is kept clear of litter, were stunned to discover the rubble when they visited the Altyre Estate site this week.
Fears had been raised the secluded location had become the scene of late-night drinking sessions.
Now the landowners are unsure whether to replace the structure, which cost more than £20,000 about four years ago, due to concerns it may be set alight again.
Edward Dunbar, a managing agent for the estate, said: “It was off the main road, you had to know it was there to find it, but it was very well used during the day.
“A lot of people liked the quiet spot and there were a lot of positive comments made about it and the wildlife you could see.
“However, by night it appears that the hide had an alternative use, by the sounds of things. Drink cans have been found and there’s been graffiti but nothing to suggest this would happen.”
Glass windows have also been smashed at the hide in previous years, which had resulted in them being replaced with plastic glass.
Wading birds, wild fowl and ducks were most commonly scene at the wetland, which was formed following work on the Mosset Burn flood scheme.
However, enthusiasts have also reported spotting otters at the countryside location, which is on the south-eastern edge of Forres.
Police believe the fire started between Saturday and Monday.
Constable Sean Wood said: “The damage caused by fire to the wooden bird hide has, understandably, caused much sadness and disappointment to members of the community in Forres.
“I would urge anyone who may have knowledge of the circumstances of when and how the fire came to be started to come forward with any information.”
Anyone with information should call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
