Shoppers across the north of Scotland have been urged to “buy local” ahead of Valentine’s Day.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead has revealed some of the surcharges being added to bills for rural romantics in the region.
A £15.99 surcharge has been tagged on to a deal offering “free courier delivery” for a dozen red roses and bottle or Prosecco.
Meanwhile an extra £10 fee has been added to an alcohol described as the “Liqueur of Love” and a £5.56 cost to deliver a £3.49 key ring.
Research from the Scottish Parliament has found that customers north of the border pay £36million more in delivery surcharges compared to those in England.
Mr Lochhead said: “Rural residents are some of the most online shoppers in the UK, yet time after time get stung – many retailers can’t even bring themselves to show the north some love this Valentine’s.
“I’ll be buying my gifts locally but despite widespread outrage, retailers are still at it and imposing heart-breaking surcharges.
“The case for action by the UK Government gets stronger with each new case that comes to light.”
