Spangley dancing contest raises £8,000 charity boost in Moray

Couples have foxtrotted and waltzed their way to a massive charity haul to maintain a treasured town hall in Moray.

A total of 11 dancing pairs stepped out in front of a run of packed audiences in Lossiemouth for the third annual Strictly Lossie fundraiser.

More than 600 people attended the three shows across the Easter weekend to pick their favourite couples at the spangly extravaganza.

Yesterday, organisers announced that more than £8,000 will be raised for local causes once the event expenses were covered.

Audience members clapped, cheered and waved colourful cards to select the champions at each show after a panel of experts narrowed the contenders to the top two.

Several achieved perfect 10s from the scorers on the way to wowing the audience with lifts and turns while performing moves from Latin and ballroom favourites.

Instructors Iain and Fiona Sneddon gave the hopefuls more than 330 hours of tuition in the months leading up to the weekend shows.

Last night Julie Williams, who was part of the team of organisers, praised the commitment of volunteers and dancers to support the town hall.

Students from Lossiemouth High School, who will receive a donation to help towards a trip to Borneo in south-east Asia, added to the band of helpers.

Mrs Williams said: “We always try to put on a bright and colourful event that people want to come out to the town hall for. It wouldn’t be possible without all the volunteers who always come forward to help us though.

“The crowd always get right into it. The judges pick the top two but the audience pick the winners at each show.

“It’s great to see so many people come out and support us. It all helps towards the running costs and redecoration of the hall.”

Lossiemouth Town Hall is now run by a management committee of locals after it was saved from closure in 2001.

Donations will also be made to the local Rotaract group, the Lossiemouth Youth Cafe and to the town’s senior citizen’s Christmas lunch from the proceeds.
