This is the scene of the Fire at Glenglassaugh Workshop, Portsoy, Banff AB45 2SQ on Saturday 10 March 2018.

A north-east joiner has thanked firefighters for saving his workshop from the flames.

The blaze hit David Urquhart Joiners, near Portsoy last month, leaving a huge hole in the roof and destroying tools and equipment.

But a month on, the father-and-son business is up and running again.

Last night, David and William Urquhart went to meet some of the firefighters from Portsoy and Cullen who battled the fire at the Glenglassaugh workshop.

They also handed over a cheque for £500 to The Fire Fighter’s Charity.

Mr Urquhart senior said: “Without the fire brigade the whole place would have been burnt down.

“They were here in a short time after we made the first emergency call.

“When they did come they pulled in another seven fire engines and a high level pump, so they put a lot of resources into it.

“We had the ambulance crew as well just to give the crews support.

“We just want to say thanks to them.”

The business has been running for almost 40 years and employs 28 people.

Mr Urquhart sen said they are returning to full capacity as they attempt to fulfil orders for people across the north-east.

He said: “After they got the fire under control I spoke to them and they agreed that I could do temporary work to stop water going over another machine.

“That was a big bonus as far as I was concerned because if we had lost that, we could not have been making anything for five months, but we saved it and are now using it.

“By the end of the first week after the fire we were back up and working.

“We are not back at full capacity but are probably running at 80% but we are producing stuff and delivering it.”
