An action group has been formed to tackle human trafficking in Moray.

Two Vietnamese men aged 45 and 20 have been arrested and charged in relation to alleged human trafficking offences in the Elgin area.

The men were charged following extensive inquiries in the Dover and Elgin areas carried out in conjunction with partners including other police forces.

A report has been sent to the Procurator Fiscal and it is anticipated that they will appear at Elgin Sheriff Court at a later date.

Detective Constable Kenny MacConnachie of the public protection unit said: “Human trafficking offences can be complex in nature and we are grateful to members of the public who have supported us with this investigation which was carried out over a number of months.

“We will continue to work closely with the public and our partner agencies to ensure an effective and efficient response to any incidents which may be reported to us.

“Human trafficking can manifest itself in many different formats including, although not limited to, labour and sexual exploitation, during which the person or group of people themselves may not realise they have been trafficked.

“It is important that members of the public are aware that trafficking exists in their communities.

“We aim to continue to make the north-east of Scotland a hostile environment for those involved in human trafficking and would welcome any new information which can assist us in this regard.

“Information can be provided by contacting 101, 999 in an emergency or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
