A mother watched in horror as a car smashed into a wall near her as she walked through Nairn.
Inverness Sheriff Court was told that teenager Norman Stewart of Covesea Road, Elgin was drunk at the wheel of his brother’s car in the centre of the seaside town on July 7.
The 18-year-old was being pursued through the streets by police who gave up the chase because it was unsafe to continue.
But fiscal depute David Morton said that a short time later, Stewart lost control of the vehicle while travelling at almost twice the 30mph speed limit and crashed.
Stewart admitted driving with almost three times the permitted alcohol in his system, driving dangerously and without insurance.
He was fined £600, ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work and banned from driving for two years.
The teenager also has to sit the extended driving test before regaining his licence.
