Construction work on Moray’s busiest road will be halted at weekends to avoid affecting the Christmas shopping rush.
Work has started on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road on the eastern outskirts of Elgin to create a roundabout entrance to a new business park at Barmuckity.
Temporary traffic lights were due to be in operation at the junction until the end of January in order for the work to be done.
However, Billy Miller Contractor and Springfield Properties have agreed to stop the work on Saturdays and Sundays during December to help entice shoppers into the Elgin following talks with the town’s business improvement district (Bid) and Moray Council.
Yesterday, Elgin Bid said the move would help shoppers to support local businesses during the festive period.
Moray Council leader Graham Leadbitter added: “We all know the work needs to be done but it is a positive response from Springfield and Billy Miller Contractor to leave the road clear of traffic lights.
“It is going to help our town centre businesses at what is their busiest time of year.”
