Pupils and parents at a Moray primary school have showcased their generosity by handing over 50 bags of donations to their local foodbank.
Children from Mosstodloch school came up with the idea to give something back to others and produced small paper bags which pupils and their families were invited to take away and return with a couple of items for Moray Foodbank.
The scheme was a big success and gathered a great response with about 50 bags of items including tinned fruit, toiletries and other assorted products.
It was all part of a whole school enterprising event that took into account the need to support others less fortunate both at home and abroad.
The Mosstodloch parent council donated £20 seed money to each class and pupils had to come up with ideas to grow that money around the context of Christmas.
Teacher of the primary two class, Laura Davidson, was proud of what her pupils had achieved and the success of their campaign.
She said: “The children had been thinking about the acts of kindness, and how they could help others, they’ve been making Christmas cards for elderly people in the neighbourhood.
“At the school’s Christmas market and rather than just asking people to pay for things, we thought we would give out food bags and ask people to donate one or two items to give to Moray Foodbank.”
Moray Foodbank is the only one of its kind in the region and is experiencing one of its busiest years yet, as families struggle to cope with the roll-out of universal credit.
However, they have been the recipient of some generous donations from Elgin BID, Greenwards Primary School and various other Moray organisations.
Gillian Pirie, volunteer development officer at the charity, thanked the community for their help.
She said: “This donation from Mosstodloch is fabulous and the children have done really well and put a lot of thought into what they have collected for us and they have covered everything we need in food parcels.
“We’ve had quite a lot of food come in but with the 20% rise of food going out, a lot of that has already gone out.
“There’s been fantastic support from throughout Moray, especially from the churches and schools.”
