A man has died and three other men are being treated in hospital following a five-vehicle pile-up on a busy trunk route.
Two vans and three cars came into collision on the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road at Forres, between the town’s Enterprise Park and the roundabout leading to Findhorn.
The accident happened at 5pm on Thursday and the road was closed for several hours afterwards.
Police have now confirmed that a 61-year-old man, who was airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following the crash, has died of his injuries.
The other three injured men are being treated at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin.
Sergeant Scott Deans, of the area’s road policing department, said: “Our thoughts at this difficult time remain with those involved.
“Our investigations continue and in order to help piece together exactly what happened, I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision and who hasn’t yet come forward, to contact police on 101 and quote incident number 2837 of 17/01/2019.”
A spokeswoman for the fire service confirmed that crews from Forres and Elgin attended but were only required to clear up debris and left shortly before 6pm.
Traffic diversions were been put in place via Kinloss.
