The historic links between a Moray clothing company and a hospital in its home town have been celebrated to help fund a refurbishment of the health facility.
Johnstons of Elgin supplied the first blankets to Dr Gray’s when the hospital opened in 1819 and followed it up with pillow slips and sheets a month later.
Now the connection is being celebrated with the dome from the health facility being embroidered on a £12,000 line of scarves, which have been donated to campaigners to sell.
The Friends of Dr Gray’s group is aiming to raise £60,000 to refurbish the hospital’s clock tower as part of the 200th anniversary celebrations.
A fundraising quiz held at the Johnstons mill this week added another £4,100 to the total.
Tim Wakefield, who is chairman of Friends of Dr Gray’s and works as a porter at the hospital, said: “It’s really helped us kick our fundraising up a notch and the interest from the public has been astonishing.”
The scarves are on sale at the Johnstons mill until tomorrow for £49. They will then be available to order by e-mailing sales@friendsofdrgrays.org.
