Emergency crews were sent to a home on Masonic Court, Reidhaven Square, at around 9pm last night.
The A96 was earlier closed in both directions from Bridge Street to Findlater Lane, with diversions in place.
Four fire appliances were sent to the blaze, from Keith, Fochabers and two from Huntly.
Police said that one male died following the fire in the residential property, which was brought under control by 10pm.
They have launched a joint investigation with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
Detective Inspector Norman Stevenson said: “Inquiries into the circumstances of the fire will be ongoing today, however at this stage there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.
“The local community are thanked for their patience whilst emergency services have dealt with this incident.”
The A96 in Keith has now reopened.
