A Moray school pupil has been celebrated nationally after being named the UK’s engineering student of the year.
Lee Scott, who attends Keith Grammar School, picked up the prize from pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca Science at an awards ceremony in London this week.
The 18-year-old dreamed of a career in engineering but a lack of confidence and uncertainty about how to get there led to him almost dropping out of school in his fifth year.
However, after a teacher enrolled him in the Career Ready programme he was teamed up with Steven Dunbar, managing director of oil and gas firm Global Resources, to act as a mentor.
Now Lee has completed two internships in Keith and Aberdeen and is now on track to land a dream job.
Mr Dunbar said: “From our sessions together post-internships, I remain impressed by Lee’s new-found focus and maturity.
“I think this is best highlighted by his choice to enrol in an Open University Engineering Course, which is not available at his school but involves him driving 15 miles away to attend classes.”
The Career Ready programme is offered to all senior secondary school pupils in Moray. There are currently 50 students being mentored by local firms.
