One of the most well-known sporting figures in Forres has died at the age of 70.
Richard Fotheringham, who enjoyed tremendous success during his career at Forres Thistle and Forres Mechanics was the type of player who was loved by supporters because he never offered anything less than 100% for his club and remained close to his roots throughout his life.
During his career, he won the League championship in 1971-72, the North Regional Cup in 1972-73, the North Scotland Cup in 1973-74 and 1975-76 and amassed a string of other silverware during what was an auspicious period for the Forres collective.
He was also a long-time serving member at Forres Golf Club and tributes were paid to the keen sportsman after his death on April 1 at Seafield Hospital in Buckie.
Forres Thistle stated: “It is sad news about the passing of ex-Thistle and Mechanics player Richard Fotheringham.
“All at the club wish to pass on our condolences to a stalwart of the town and all our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.”
Mr Fotheringham was married to Heather and the couple had two sons, Greig and Bryan. The latter said after the news of his father’s death: “He suffered from vascular dementia, but he loved the Thistle and loved looking through his scrapbook.”
“It was some list of honours for him to enjoy.”
Mr Fotheringham’s funeral service will take place on Thursday, April 11, at St Laurence Church in Forres at 1pm.
Given how many memories he created on the field and the myriad friends he amassed during his days on the football field and the golf course, one can expect there will be a big send-off for this stalwart of his community.
