Elgin is in the running to be named Britain’s best urban area for walkers.
The Ramblers charity has named the Moray town among its top 10 walking neighbourhoods, with Falkirk the only other Scottish contender.
The title is awarded annually to areas taking steps to create green, welcoming and walkable streets – planned for those on foot ahead of motorists.
Elgin was recognised for its “pleasant and walkable centre” – including the fully pedestrianised high street – which is easily accessible on foot from new housing developments nearby.
British Heart Foundation research found more than two in five Scots didn’t reach their recommended activity levels.
Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said: “A lot of effort has been put in over the years to make Elgin a really good walking location.
“There are many good walking routes – whether you live in one of the local housing estates or on outskirts of town, there’ll be a walking route close by to get you from A to B.”
Chief executive of the Ramblers Vanessa Griffiths said: “Our finalists this year are fantastic examples of how communities and local authorities can work together to create neighbourhoods that are designed around people, making them enjoyable and safe to walk around. We want councils and developers across the country to follow their example and help us create a country that is truly designed for walking.”
Areas in Greater Manchester, London, Lincolnshire, Aberystwyth, Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Brighton complete the shortlist.
The winner will be chosen in an online vote closing on June 30 which can be found at www.ramblers.org.uk/vote
