Legendary musician to become latest act to make debut at Speyside concert series

One of Scotland’s most celebrated songwriters is preparing to head to Speyside to perform in a series of concerts aimed at keeping traditional music alive.

The Arc Sessions were formed four years ago in Fochabers to celebrate the village’s connections with the genre.

They also aims to encourage a new generation of talent by giving them the chance to support established acts as well as giving them the opportunity to watch the stars perform.

Now Dougie MacLean, famed for his anthem Caledonia, will make his first visit to the concert series to perform at the village’s Public Institute.

The 64-year-old musician has played around the world, on the stages of the venues such as the Carnegie Hall in New York and the Sydney Opera House.

But Mhairi Marwick, who established the Arc Sessions, believes the Fochabers venue has generated its own reputation among famous acts, encouraging them to perform in the small Speyside village.

She said: “Fochabers is very small but it’s also very special. It’s got a huge traditional music scene that started with Speyfest more than 20 years ago.

“The word is definitely spreading. Bands are speaking about what it’s like to play in Fochabers and it’s meaning that people are approaching us now too.

“It’s exciting to have someone as legendary as Dougie MacLean play. It’s going to be a very special night.

“Caledonia is one of the greatest Scottish songs so it will be particularly special to hear it live.”

Dougie MacLean’s performance later this month will be the last in the eight-date concert series for the summer before it returns with Manran in September.

Performers later in the year will also include local favourite James Alexander, who helped establish Speyfest, and Trail West.

Dougie MacLean will perform at the Fochabers Institute on Saturday June 22 at 7.30pm.

Tickets can be bought online at www.arcsessions.com or at Christie’s Chemist in the village.
