A war memorial in Moray is in the running to be named as one of the best kept in Scotland.
The tribute in Forres, which stands near the junction of Bridge Street and St Catherine’s Road, commemorates locals who died during the First and Second World Wars as well as in the Gulf War in the 1990s.
And now, the memorial, which features a bronze soldier standing at ease, has been named as one of the best maintained in the Highlands and Islands in a Royal British Legion competition.
The landmark will go forward to the national competition with judging due to take place later this month.
Moray Council maintain the memorial with local volunteers cleaning the stonework, weeding the path, cutting the grass and tending to hanging baskets.
Council convener Shona Morrison said: “It is a fitting tribute to those who have fought for our country and I’m pleased to see the hard work of our colleagues and volunteers has not gone unnoticed.”
Legion Scotland chief executive Claire Armstrong added: “More than 100 entries have been received for this year’s competition and the standard has, once again, been especially high from across the north-east.
“The continued interest in the best kept war memorial competition and the countless hours dedicated to their upkeep underlines that remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country remains as important and relevant as ever.”
