A funding boost for a Moray video production company has been described as “quantum leap” to help it expand further into the American market.
Elgin-based Northport has worked on locations across Asia, Europe and South America on commissions for US firms after building links during a visit there.
Now the company has secured a £35,600 investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to help fund a programme to help boost its international sales even further.
The cash will be used to help the firm establish a new studio near the town centre after moving from its current base on Lossie Wynd as well as providing assistance in buying new equipment.
Director Dianne Stevenson said: “It’s a quantum leap for us as a home-grown business with international ambition. We’re excited to grow our export market while living and working in Moray.”
Managing director Tom Duncan added: “We’re delighted to be taking Northport to the next level and our relationship with HIE has been crucial in determining that path.
“Our new studio will create a focal point for film and creative activity in the area while our new high-spec camera platform will push the quality of our work even further.”
Northport was formed in 2014 as a shared studio for local freelance contractors before it evolved into a production company.
The firm now has six contributors and has worked on campaigns across sectors including for clothing firm Jack Wills, jewellers Hamilton and Inches and tourist campaigns for the Cairngorms alongside commissions for Johnstons of Elgin and Moray Speyside Tourism.
The studio’s £121,000 business development programme also aims to use the investment to redevelop its branding in line with findings from a recent visit to the US.
Scott McKnockiter, HIE’s business development account manager, hopes the firm can contribute to retaining local talent in Moray.
He added: “UK video advertising spend is forecast to grow significantly, even in the short term.
“This project will strengthen the position of Northport, lead to the firm’s continued growth and allow it to target new opportunities and markets.
“As the business develops, it will also create potential to employ more young people, through apprenticeships, graduate placements and staff development programmes.”
