A Speyside butcher is celebrating claiming top honours in a pie contest just 18 months after opening.
S A Mackie Butchers opened in Aberlour after the only other business of its kind in the village shut down.
However, within less than two years it has already become a hit with locals and has now been named as having the best steak pie in the north of Scotland.
Judges from Scottish Craft Butchers praised Stewart Mackie’s recipe, which includes homemade gravy and a little beer, as “outstanding” after it was honed following months of tweaking and arduous taste tests.
The farmer-turned-butcher said: “When the only butcher shop in Aberlour closed down, I spotted an opportunity and decided to establish a butcher’s business myself.
“It’s been hard work, but we have a growing, widespread, loyal customer base who are pretty good judges of our products.
“Our pies have always been hugely popular and it’s tremendous to see them do well in the national evaluations.
“We realised when we first opened that our steak pie was proving extremely popular so we set about making it even better.”
