Moray Council’s children and young people’s committee confirmed yesterday that further work will be carried out to tackle the cost of the school day.
Action towards reducing the costs that arise within a school day will commence in December and is designed to help parents and carers throughout Moray.
To assist the council’s agenda, the Child Poverty Action Group has employed two part-time project workers to be based at Moray Council.
They will liaise with children, staff and parents across 35 schools in order to gather the necessary information required to complete “poverty audit proofing” and audits about the cost of the school day.
Additionally, a report will be formulated which will detail the impact of child poverty and school costs from findings collected from professional school staff and schools across Moray.
Another important step in the council’s plan is to assemble an education poverty steering group to support Moray’s child poverty action plan.
Sonya Warren, chairwoman of Moray Council’s children and young people’s services committee, welcomed the news.
She said: “I’m particularly glad that Moray has been chosen to host the two project officers, due to the work already happening locally.”
“I look forward to hearing the progress on reducing the cost of the school day for our residents, so none of our young people miss out on any opportunities in their learning due to low income.”
