The world’s largest private whisky collection of more than 3,900 bottles is poised to go under the hammer.
American businessman Richard Gooding spent his lifetime buying rare malts until his death in 2014.
The Denver native displayed the archive, dubbed The Perfect Collection, in a dedicated room at his family home, which was known as the “pub”.
Included in the sale are coveted and rare bottlings including a Macallan 1926 Valerio Adami 60-year-old and a Springbank 1919 50-year-old.
The list also includes bottlings from lost distilleries, including from Stromness Distillery and the largest collection from Macallan to ever go to auction.
Iain McClune, founder of Whisky Auctioneer, who is running the sale, expects interest from across the world.
He said: “For me it is the diversity within The Perfect Collection that is perhaps the most exciting aspect.
“The breadth makes it an opportunity accessible for all – from those new to whisky collecting to the seasoned connoisseur looking to crown their collection, there is something here for every whisky lover.”
The auction has been split into two parts. The first items will go on sale online at www.whiskyauctioneer.com today and run to February 17. The second sale will begin on April 10.
