One of Moray’s leading employers has backed a campaign to restore maternity services to the region’s biggest hospital.
A review, commissioned by NHS Grampian, has recommended that the Dr Gray’s unit in Elgin be downgraded to a midwife-led service.
However, campaign group Keep Mum has warned of the risks involved in more births happening outside of the area, due to concerns about the impact of extra journeys to Aberdeen and Inverness.
Now, Aberlour-based Walkers Shortbread has backed the drive for the retention of a specialist facility in Elgin.
A statement on social media said: “These services are essential in our area, expectant mums must have a level of assurance, at a tense time for any family, that a number of scenarios can be dealt with locally.
“Having to travel to Aberdeen or Inverness puts additional pressures on the mother as well as the extended family.
“Keeping these services local continues to make Speyside a great place to live and work.”
Meanwhile, NHS Grampian has organised consultation events for later this month on Wednesday, March 18 and Saturday, March 21 to update locals on the current situation.
A spokesman said: “The engagement sessions will be relaxed workshop-style events, with small discussion groups looking at views and needs for the local maternity unit.
“This is an opportunity to bring together the community and staff to explore what is valued, works well and developing on the many strengths of the Dr Gray’s maternity service.”
