A cancer charity has hailed their “selfless” volunteer drivers for clocking up the miles to help patients access treatments during lockdown.
David Paterson and Martin Douglas, both from Cullen, are volunteer drivers for Clan Cancer Support and take patients from across Moray to appointments in Aberdeen, Inverness and Elgin.
The charity’s cancer services area manager praised the pair for their efforts in such a difficult time, with maintaining a distance and the risk of infection all the more important for vulnerable cancer sufferers.
She said: “We are so grateful to David and Martin for continuing to volunteer throughout these difficult times.
“Without transportation, we offer people could have to spend hours on buses and trains, which often make a day-trip impossible.
“This service also recognises that the client group that require the transport can at times be in the vulnerable category in relation to Covid-19, so the use of public transport increases their anxiety around the potential risk of infection.”
Mr Paterson said it was an “enjoyable” way to help, and urged people to support Clan’s recently-launched appeal to secure its future.
He said:”The services are provided free of charge and the charity relies entirely upon donations.”
Meanwhile, Move More Highlands, which helps keep patients active, has launched virtual live classes to keep people moving during lockdown.
