A Moray scout troop is working to transform an abandoned wooded area near their hut into a safe community space.
The 1st Elgin Scouts want to turn what they have described as a “dumping spot” close to The Wards into a vibrant spot for use by all their neighbours.
Moray Council has already given the group a 10-year lease for the ground, leaving the Scouts free to push on with their plans.
They include the creation of a sensory garden, a firepit area and a path for wheelchair access.
Moray Scouts district commissioner, Dougie McPhee, believes the project can be a “winner” by helping improve people’s mental wellbeing across the region.
The scouts are working with groups such as the Out of the Darkness Theatre Company, Weir Black Belt Academy and Cedarwood to “grow” community engagement.
And a wealth of potential users have already expressed an interest in what could be a secure outdoor learning space.
Mr McPhee said: “The ground has always been a mess and the scout group are in the process of cleaning it up.
“We have had several agencies in contact with us because it is a fenced-off area and it could be used for outdoor learning.
“We have a secure environment which will be upgraded to allow young people and adults to improve their mental wellbeing and we are looking across Moray to provide help and assistance.
“Moray Council are looking to work with their youth groups at the site.
“We believe this project will be a winner.”
