The pond in Elgin’s Cooper Park is once again filled with water – but only temporarily.
The attraction, which was drained at the start of the summer as part of ongoing anti-flooding works around the town, was partially restored yesterday in preparation for the Commonwealth Games baton coming to the region.
A council spokesman said: “The pond is being partially refilled for the Queen’s Baton Relay celebration event in Cooper Park on Thursday.
“Thereafter it will be drained again to allow work to be completed on a wall and embankment which are being constructed at the north end of the pond as part of the Elgin flood alleviation scheme.
“Once that work has been completed the pond will be cleaned out and refilled permanently around the end of August or early September.”
The baton is due to arrive in Moray today, with its first stop at Seafield Park in Keith at 2.15pm.
On Thursday the baton will be in Cooper Park at 6.15pm midway through a family celebratory gala.
Beginning at 5pm, the event will include taster sessions delivered by local sports clubs, dance performances from secondary schools and a choir.
