The Save Milne’s High School campaign is hoping to get the backing of Scots tennis star Andy Murray’s mother.
The Fochabers group got in touch with Judy Murray via social media more than a week ago.
Mrs Murray has tutored young tennis talent in the town, so the group already had an association with her, and the family also has connections with the community. Andy’s grandfather, Roy Erskine, spent the first 12 years of his life in Fochabers and his great-grandfather was the local chemist.
The group is still waiting to hear back from Mrs Murray, who has been at Wimbledon to watch Andy and her other son, Jamie.
Chairman Dougie Potter said: “We’ve also been trying to get in touch with anyone who has any connection with the clan Milne who may not be aware of the situation with the school, to get their support.”
The Save Milne’s High campaign petition currently has 3,500 signatures, with 300 on the new online petition.
Mr Potter added: “We have engaged local councillors in the hope that they will recognise the alternative vision for Fochabers area.
“In 10 to 15 years’ time there will be a dual carriageway between Inverness and Aberdeen, and Fochabers is the perfect commuter village with a good high school.”
An analysis of the feedback from the public is expected in August.
