Two Moray servicemen will embark on a 10,000-mile road trip to Asia to raise money for charity.
RAF Lossiemouth-based Sergeant Mike Muir and Corporal Colin Murray will donate the proceeds of their Mongol Rally adventure to Spinal Injuries Scotland.
Fellow 2622 Highland Squadron member Phil Thornley’s wife Nikki was seriously injured in a car crash in September last year.
She was left paralysed from the chest down for the rest of her life and has remained at Glasgow’s Southern and General Hospital spinal injury unit since the accident.
Cpl Murray said: “The couple were going on holiday when the collision happened.
“It shook us all and spurred everyone on to do something for the family.
“It has given us a clear purpose to complete the rally.
“We have raised up to £2,500 so far but are expecting it to rise as we go through the trip.”
The Mongol Rally involves driving a car of less than 1.2 litres, which is less than 10 years old, from the UK to Mongolia unassisted.
The two men will set off from RAF Lossiemouth bound for London in their Daewoo Kalos later this month, with the race officially starting on Sunday, July 20.
From there they will have to conquer 17 countries over mountains and deserts to reach the Mongolian capital Ulan Bator.
2622 Highland Squadron is the most northerly Royal Auxiliary Air Force unit in the UK and was formed in 1979 to help defend the airbase.
