Firefighters battled two serious blazes in Moray yesterday.
Mystery surrounds the circumstances of the first fire, which broke out at a travellers site about two miles from Elgin.
In the second incident, a woman managed to flee a family home before it was severely damaged in Lhanbryde.
Two cars and a caravan were destroyed in the first blaze which happened on a plot of land near the Troves industrial estate.
Firefighters were called to the scene by a passing motorist.
It is understood nobody was on the site when the emergency services arrived.
The area remained deserted yesterday afternoon as a fire investigation team surveyed the wreckage.
A police spokesman said officers were trying to find the families who live at the camp.
He said: “We were alerted by the fire service at 12.45am. Investigations are still ongoing.”
An S-reg Audi, which was parked across the site’s entrance, was gutted.
An N-reg Cavalier and a caravan were also damaged beyond repair.
A van parked nearby had both its passenger and rear doors open and a broken windscreen.
Two police officers stood guard outside the site which was surrounded by tape.
Inside the camp, seven remaining caravans were all empty. Two undamaged cars and van had also been left at the site.
The second – unconnected – blaze is understood to have been caused by faulty electrics.
It broke out shortly before 3am in Woodlands Drive, Lhanbryde.
Four fire crews – from Lossiemouth, Elgin, Rothes and Fochabers – attended the scene, along with a height appliance from Inverness.
At least one woman was in the house when the fire began, but she managed to escape the building unharmed.
A fire spokesman said: “Someone was at home and luckily she got out.”
The top floor of the house was completely gutted by the fire, while the ground floor was severely water damaged.
The occupant, whose husband works offshore, was too upset to comment yesterday beyond saying she had “lost everything”.
