A travelling community in Moray has moved to silence rumours that there is ongoing feud in the region.
A fire at the weekend destroyed a caravan and two cars at an encampment near Troves on the outskirts of Elgin.
However, the group camped at the site believe the blaze was probably accidental.
The owner of the destroyed caravan stated that he had lost everything in the fire which started in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He said: “Everything I had in this world was in that caravan. The only clothes I have left are those I’m standing up in.
“I’ve lost my laptop, my forklift, chainsaw and driving licences as well as my birth certificate.
“There were lots of personal family mementoes – they’ve all gone, too.”
The 21-year-old, who did not want to be named, added that he was at a loss to know what to do now.
He said: “There was nobody on the site when the fire broke out because we were all away on holiday in Skye.
“My first reaction when I got back and saw what had happened was ‘why me?’.
“I haven’t got an enemy in the world. There’s no reason for anybody to have done this.
“There are no feuds going on among travellers in the area.
“I think it must have been an accident but the fire brigade have already carried out an investigation. I’ll have to wait to see what they’re saying.”
As well as his caravan and a generator, the man’s N-reg Peugeot was also destroyed in the blaze.
A nine-year-old Audi was also left gutted. This vehicle, which belonged to a friend, had been parked up across the site’s entrance to restrict access while the group was away.
The blaze was reported by a passing motorist and the police were notified at 12.45am on Sunday.
Speaking yesterday, a police spokeswoman said: “Enquiries are still ongoing into the fire. We would appeal to any witness who may have seen anything to get in touch.”
