The bridge at Lesmurdie is wide enough to go over a culvert, which diverts flood water around the old Brewery Bridge further down the river. It will be christened on Thursday by council convener Stewart Cree and the deputy mayor of Landshut Erwin Schneck. Councillor Cree said: “I’m very pleased that Moray Council has taken the opportunity to name the bridge after the bridge in Landshut. “It’s great to have a contingent over from Landshut and I think the appearance of the bridge is very striking.” Elgin’s twin town link with Landshut in Bavaria was established in 1956 and is one of the longest running in Europe. There is already a bridge in Landshut named after Elgin so this is a reciprocal gesture. More than 600 tonnes of steelwork has gone into the bridge, with 1,460 tonnes of concrete required for the foundations. The bridge was closed one day to traffic earlier this month amid rising flood waters. The flood measures being constructed around the town are due for completion early in 2015 and aim to protect 600 homes and 250 businesses.
